At the Technical University of Mombasa, efforts to improve how students and staff engage with university systems continue to take shape through research-driven solutions. Innocent Sunday Juma, in collaboration with Dr Mvurya Mgala, has built an artificial intelligence model that promises to transform access to academic and administrative information.

For many, navigating university websites can be time-consuming, with essential details such as exam schedules, fee structures, and programme requirements spread across multiple pages. Recognizing this challenge, Mr Innocent approached it as a thematic research problem and worked toward an applied solution. The result is ICI TUM GPT, an AI-powered model that allows users to ask questions in natural language and receive fast, accurate, and complete responses.

He presented this model during the ongoing Multidisciplinary Conference at the Technical University of Mombasa, highlighting its potential to enhance how institutional information is accessed and used.

What makes the system stand out is its reliability. Every response is drawn strictly from verified institutional data, ensuring accuracy and avoiding AI hallucinations. This means the system does not generate unsupported or fabricated information. If the required data is not available, it clearly indicates so, maintaining user trust.

The model’s impact is already clear. It delivers information over 90 percent faster, achieves a 96 percent accuracy rate, 85% fewer navigation steps and significantly reduces the steps users take to find answers. These improvements mark a major shift in user experience, making access to information more efficient and less frustrating.

While currently tailored for the Institute of Computing and Informatics, there are plans to expand the system across the Technical University of Mombasa.

The work of Mr Innocent reflects a strong commitment to research that translates into practical solutions, where information is not just available, but accessible, accurate, and truly useful.
