On 14th October, the Directorate of Career Services from the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) hosted a transformative career guidance and exploration event at the Mabokoni Kwale Campus, bringing together bright students from Dori Girls High School and Shimba Hills Secondary School.

The event kicked off with a warm welcome from the TUM Kwale Campus Director, Dr. Ali Shee, who walked the eager students through the diverse academic programs available at the university.

Drawing from his own professional background, Director Ali Shee placed a special spotlight on the School of Engineering, unpacking how modern technical courses can pave the way for impactful, future ready careers.

The students also received profound wisdom on personal purpose from Prof. Anwar Hood, the Director of Graduate Studies. Encouraging the cohort to understand what a true career is, Prof. Hood emphasized that career choice must always start with self identity. He shared a deeply moving personal reflection on the meaning of his own name:

“My name is Anwar and I wanted to be a light (Noor from Anwar) from my name, and here I am today shedding a light to you.”

Adding to the power of the session, the students were deeply inspired by relatable testimonies from local trailblazers.

A standout moment was the address by Dr. Umulkulthum Yeya, a proud native of Kwale County. Seeing someone from their own home community standing before them as an accomplished academic and leader served as a powerful, living blueprint of success. Her story ignited immense aspiration, proving to the students that their dreams are valid and entirely achievable right from Kwale.

Supported by a wealth of personal testimonies from other distinguished speakers, the event successfully bridged the gap between secondary school and higher education.

By bringing together academia, inspirational mentorship, and high schools, TUM provides students with the clarity and confidence they need to map out their professional paths early.
