Three students from the Technical University of Mombasa proudly represented Kenya at the World Beach Tchoukball Open Tournament in Bali, Indonesia, held from 2nd to 8th August 2025. The global competition brought together elite teams from around the world, making Kenya’s second-place finish a remarkable achievement.

The team included Peter Otieno Ayoo from the Department of Mathematics and Physics, who also captains the Kenyan Tchoukball team and is a former TUM Handball captain for nearly four years; Brian Omoja Otieno from the Department of Management Science; and Wycliffe Joshua from the Department of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering. All three athletes, with roots in TUM’s handball team, earned their national call-up after a competitive selection process at Nyali Beach.

Supported by TUM management, TUM Sports Officer Mr. Anthony Mwanzia, Coach Madam Carol Nyadiero, and Coach Akbar Ali from India, the Kenyan men’s team delivered an outstanding performance, finishing second overall in the men’s category.

Beach Tchoukball is a dynamic sport that combines elements of handball and volleyball, played on sand for an added challenge. Players score points by bouncing the ball off a rebounding frame so that it lands on the sand without being caught by the opposing team, making it a fast-paced game of speed, skill, and strategy.

For Peter, the tournament was more than just about winning medals. “Attending the Tchoukball Beach World Championship in Bali was an unforgettable experience filled with both challenges and growth,” he said. “Being the first time representing the African region and Kenya on the international stage was an honor, and competing against some of the best teams in the world tested our skill, teamwork, and resilience. Beyond the matches, the tournament exposed us to diverse playing styles, cultural exchanges, and the vibrant energy of Bali. The spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie made the journey worthwhile, and it deepened my appreciation for the uniting power of sports across borders.”

Competing against some of the world’s best teams, the TUM students not only showcased their talent but also gained valuable experience on an international stage. Their achievement has brought pride to both the university and the nation.
