The Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) has strengthened its teaching and learning infrastructure following the handover of two renovated buildings, marking another milestone in the University's commitment to providing a conducive environment for academic excellence.
The projects comprise the School of Pure and Applied Sciences Building and the Engineering Workshops and Laboratories Building, both of which have undergone extensive renovation to support teaching, learning, research and departmental operations.
The School of Pure and Applied Sciences Building and the adjoining Prof. Mazrui Block were renovated at a cost of KSh 27.3 million. The facility has been named in honour of the late Prof. Odhiambo, former Chairman of the University Council, in recognition of his dedicated service and contribution to the growth of the institution.
The Engineering Workshops and Laboratories Building, renovated at a cost of KSh 37.8 million, will provide improved facilities to support practical training, research and academic activities within the University's engineering programmes.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Vice Chancellor Prof. Laila Abubakar commended the contractor for delivering quality work and thanked members of the University community for their patience and cooperation throughout the renovation period. She noted that the projects were funded through internally generated University resources, reflecting the University's commitment to continuously improving its infrastructure.
Prof. Abubakar further revealed that the University has planned additional developments, including the enhancement of ICT facilities and the establishment of an examination centre to further improve service delivery and the student learning experience.
The handover ceremony was attended by Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic, Research and Extension) Prof. Peter Gichangi, Registrar (Administration and Planning) Dr Shivani Patel, Chairman of the Contract Implementation Team (CIT) Arch. Onesmus Kakoi Mwatu, the respective Deans, members of the Estates Department and other members of staff.
