Technical and vocational education training at the Technical University of Mombasa of Mombasa (TUM) has received refrigeration and air conditioning equipment from a German agency.
The donation comprised of four refrigeration air conditioning machines worth Kshs 400,000 came from The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).
The AC units were handed over to the Vice chancellor Prof Laila Abubakar on Thursday, 24 July 2025.
In an exclusive interview with corporate communications office, Prof Laila disclosed that GIZ in collaboration with the National Ozone Unit (NOU) procured the equipment for use in selected training institutions and hospitals.
“This donation plays critical role in enhancing the quality of technical and vocational training (TVET) offered at TUM. The AC units will go a long way in equipping our students with practical, hands on-skills that are vital for the current and future demands of the industry, as we strive to bridge the gap between industry requirements and technical education,” Prof Laila said.
The sentiments were echoed by the Director TUM TVET Institute Dr Michael Derrick who said the contribution not only enriches training resources but also demonstrates GIZ commitment to empowering youth through skills development and supporting Kenya to move towards green cooling technologies, which are energy efficient and use natural refrigerants that are both ozone and climate friendly.
The National Ozone Unit (NOU) in the Ministry of Environment Climate change and Forestry (MECC&F) in collaboration with GIZ, with support from the governments of France and Germany have been implementing various projects under Montreal Protocol on Substances that deplete the Ozone layer for over 20 years.
Two of the projects being implemented are the Hydro chlorofluorocarbons phase out management plan (HPMP) Project and Green Cooling Initiative (GCI) Project.
The projects are supporting Kenya to move towards green cooling technologies that are energy efficient.
