TUM RECEIVES 12M TO RESEARCH ON SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT
Diseases such as Chikungunya and Dengue fever that have been making headlines in Mombasa will soon be a story of the past. Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) has received 12M from the British government to fund research projects on solid waste management in coast region, to curb the spread of diseases. Speaking at Reef hotel while she presided over a forum on solid waste disposal, TUM Vice Chancellor Prof Laila Abubakar said the University has decided to walk the talk by doing thorough research on solid waste, to provide solution to burning issues in the region. She expounded that if garbage is well sorted- manure, electricity and other useful products can be generated from it.
The Professor of Biochemistry explained that used plastic bottles are good breeding sites for organisms that cause Chikungunya. She called on Mombasa residents to come up with ideas and the university will support them to put solid waste into proper use. In his remarks Mombasa County Executive Committee Member in charge of Environment, Waste Management & Energy Dr. Godffrey Nato emphasized that the county government is committed to ensure the dream of making Mombasa a clean city becomes a reality.
“In April this year we were collecting 30% of the garbage. As we speak now we are collecting between 60-65 percent of solid waste. This is a step in the right direction.” Dr. Nato explained. The forum was held on 13th September 2018. It was organized by women caucus of TUM, Mombasa County government and the ministry of environment.
