In a solemn ceremony today, the Technical University of Mombasa fraternity gathered to bid a final farewell to Mr Charo Baya Mweri, a long-serving member of staff who dedicated 25 years of service to the University.

Mr Baya served as an Office Assistant in the Dean’s Office, School of Business. He was remembered by family, friends and colleagues for his dedication, trustworthiness, resilience and commitment to service. During the farewell ceremony, those who knew him shared heartfelt tributes and joined in prayer as they celebrated his life and legacy.

Beyond his work, Mr Baya was also a football player for the institution's team, a passion through which many came to know his bravery and resilience. He was determined both on and off the field, and was known for showing up and giving his best even when he was not in his best health or was facing personal challenges.

His determination to keep going was reflected in his 25 years of service at TUM. Colleagues remember him as a just and trustworthy person who carried out his duties with integrity and dedication. Throughout his years at the University, he was never reported for misconduct, a testament to the character with which he served.

Speaking during the farewell ceremony, the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic, Research and Extension, Prof Peter Gichangi, reflected on the importance of every individual and their contribution to the institution.

“As an Office Assistant, Mr Charo’s role may sometimes have appeared to be behind the scenes, but we all know that the smooth functioning of an institution depends on the commitment of every member of staff. His work, presence and interactions with colleagues formed an important part of the daily life of the School of Business and the University. His passing therefore reminds us that every individual matters and every contribution counts.”

As the TUM fraternity continues to mourn and pray for his family, Mr Baya’s life reminds us of the lasting impact of dedication, resilience and service.

He will be laid to rest tomorrow at his home in Kaloleni. He leaves behind his family, children and loved ones who will forever cherish his memory.
