Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) Marines Rugby team delivered their recently earned regional trophy to the Vice chancellor Prof Laila Abubakar on Thursday, January 16, 2025, in an exciting ceremony in her office.
The TUM rugby team clichéd the first position, taking home a trophy and 12 gold medals during the Federation of Eastern Africa University Sports (FEAUS) championship, held at Maseno University from Sunday of December 15 to Saturday December 22, 2024.
TUM Marines showcased their mettle by thrashing great teams from Martyr’s University Uganda, Kenya’s Maseno University, Kisii University, United States international University and Uganda Christian University as the tournament kicked off.
Teams participating in the event were highly competitive, with each standing a chance to bag a trophy. Marines put up a spirited fight that saw them clinching the 2024 Rugby FEAUS champions.
The long hours of training, practice, and sacrifice finally paid off. This was a great achievement from an event attended by universities across the Eastern Africa region.
Addressing the team while receiving the trophy at her office, Vice Chancellor Prof Laila Abubakar lauded the team for the remarkable victory. “I am very happy that you emerged winners in the highly competitive tournament. You have made us proud. Congratulations TUM Marines,” Prof Laila said.
She expressed her pride in the team for representing the university on such a prestigious platform. Prof Laila emphasized the role of sports in promoting physical health and fostering growth among students.
Rugby captain Neville Obongita highlighted the need to upgrade the rugby pitch and also requested an ambulance for future matches hosted at TUM.
Present during the ceremony were the Dean of Students, Joel Awino, and Sports Officer, Antony Mwanzia.
