On 5th December 2024, the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) joyfully celebrated its 11th Graduation Ceremony, a vibrant occasion honoring 4,929 graduates ready to embrace their bright futures. The event was attended by Cabinet Secretaries, Principal Secretaries, Government officials, University leaders, and other dignitaries who celebrated the academic success of the graduates and the continued growth of the institution.

The Chief Guest, Hon. Geoffrey Kaituko, Principal Secretary in the Department of Shipping and Maritime Affairs, delivered a speech emphasizing the critical role of education in securing employment, especially within the maritime sector. He noted, “TUM is a cornerstone in equipping our learners with cutting-edge skills that meet the demands of both local and international maritime industries.” He also highlighted the alignment of TUM's educational programs with global standards to ensure graduates are competitive in the global workforce.

Prof. Francis Kibera, Chairman of the TUM Council, also delivered a powerful and encouraging message to the graduates. Prof. Kibera, a key figure in the university’s development and strategic direction, commended the graduates for their hard work and perseverance, urging them to continue their educational journey with a focus on lifelong learning. He stated, “The best way to predict your future is to create it.”

Prof. Kibera also underscored the university’s commitment to nurturing leaders who are prepared to contribute to both local and global progress. He emphasized that TUM graduates are ambassadors of the institution and that they must carry forward the values of integrity, professionalism, and leadership. He further remarked, “You are stepping into the world not only with your academic achievements but also with the responsibility of using your knowledge and skills to make a positive impact on society.”

Vice Chancellor Prof. Laila Abubakar congratulated the graduates, stating, “This marks our 11th Graduation Ceremony, and as we stand at this remarkable event, we are filled with immense pride to witness graduands stepping boldly into the world, equipped to face the challenges and opportunities ahead.” She emphasized the launch of the Institute of Maritime and Seafaring Studies as a strategic initiative aimed at enhancing TUM’s leadership in maritime education and research.

The ceremony’s theme, 'Technological Transformation for Sustainable Opportunities within the Blue Economy', emphasized the importance of integrating technology and sustainability, particularly in the maritime sector. Prof. Abubakar encouraged the graduates to be at the forefront of this transformative shift, saying, “As new graduates, you are at the forefront of this transformative shift, equipped with the tools to lead in sustainable development, economic growth, and environmental conservation.”

TUM also unveiled its 3rd Strategic Plan for 2023-2027, which focuses on key areas such as administration, research, infrastructure, and student welfare. The plan reaffirms TUM’s commitment to contributing to Kenya’s blue economy and fostering global partnerships, as evidenced by a recent $140,000 research grant and international collaborations with institutions like the University of Ghent in Belgium.

A notable highlight was the launch of the Coastweek newspaper digital archive. Led by TUM’s library, the project digitized the complete archive of the historic Mombasa-based newspaper, making it accessible for research, education, and historical reference. This archive is more than just a collection of papers; it is a cornerstone of our local history and culture, now accessible for generations to come.

TUM’s success in promoting innovation, disability inclusion, and its role in Kenya’s innovation ecosystem were also celebrated. The university has recently been awarded a World Bank-supported project aimed at strengthening Kenya’s innovation capacity.

Two remarkable students, Waridi Rehema from the Communication Department, a graduate with a degree in Journalism and Mass Communication, and Celsa Chorogeli from the Department of Social Sciences, a graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, were awarded as the valedictorians of the Class of 2024, courtesy of National Bank of Kenya. Additionally, Janet Tsuma was recognized and awarded, courtesy of KISEB (Kenya Institute of Supplies Examination Board) as the best student in Supply Chain Management.

In an exclusive interview, Waridi reflected on her inspiring journey toward academic excellence. Having set her sights on graduating with first-class honors upon joining TUM in 2021, she humorously recalled declaring to her friends, “Next year, it will be me standing on that podium,” after hearing the previous year's female valedictorian. She highlighted that true success stems from discipline and unwavering effort, affirming, “Motivation alone is not enough for success—discipline and taking small, consistent steps toward your goal are the true keys to achievement.”

The ceremony also joyously acknowledged the multitude of proud parents and supportive families of the graduates who were in attendance. One such parent, Mr. Kinuthia Bernard, traveled all the way from Kiambu with other family members to attend his son Flavian Mwaura’s graduation from the Medical Engineering department. Mr. Kinuthia expressed his pride, saying, “I am very pleased to be here at TUM and witness so many young people successfully graduate. My son’s achievement makes this day even more special, and I urge all graduates to continue with the same spirit.” Mrs. Akinyi Noel, who traveled from Kisumu with five family members to celebrate her son Phylee Mayienga’s graduation in Criminology, shared her joy, saying, “We are indeed very happy and pleased to be here. The event has been amazing.”

The 11th Graduation Ceremony at TUM was not only a celebration of academic success but also a demonstration of the university’s ongoing commitment to innovation, sustainability, and the development of its students. With the launch of new strategic initiatives, including a focus on the blue economy, and a commitment to preserving local history through the Coastweek archive, TUM is poised to continue its growth and impact.

The Class of 2024 is now ready to embark on their professional journeys, equipped with the knowledge and skills gained at TUM, and the university remains proud to have contributed to their academic and personal growth.
