A team from the Government Chemist, led by Deputy Director Mr. Juma Mwabwagizo, visited the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) on 24th July, for a benchmarking and research collaboration mission. During a courtesy call to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Laila Abubakar, the team discussed ways to strengthen the existing partnership between the two institutions. Key areas included education tours for students, opportunities for attachments and internships, and shared research interests.

After the courtesy call, the delegation held an in-depth meeting with the School of Pure and Applied Sciences, represented by Dean Prof. Huxley Makonde, Chair of Department Dr. Ali Shee, and several academic staff. Discussions centered on potential collaborative research in public and environmental health, forensic analysis, chemical and biochemical analysis, food analysis, and product development and marketing. Other priorities included capacity building, manpower development, specialized training, short courses, and student and staff mentorship.

The team also explored resource and infrastructure sharing to boost research and academic training, as well as strategies for soliciting for advanced scientific equipment and fostering donor linkages.

The visit concluded with a tour of TUM’s laboratories, offering the Government Chemist team a closer look at the university’s facilities and research environment.

Both institutions expressed commitment to deepening collaboration that will enhance innovation, mentorship, and skills development for the benefit of students, staff, and the broader community.
