At the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM), Oscar Opwolo, an Information Science student, has emerged as a beacon of perseverance and achievement. His journey, marked by numerous accolades, showcases the transformative power of resilience and faith.

Oscar recently secured a coveted attachment slot for April-June 2024 at the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), where he impressed top management with his creativity, professionalism, leadership, and humility. This recognition was facilitated by Zeyana Mohamed, Human Resource Manager-Coast Region, who is dedicated to nurturing and supporting talent among attachés.

Oscar’s success is particularly remarkable given his challenging past. After high school, his grades didn’t meet the criteria for direct university entry, leading him to a casual job in an organization’s records section. This role ignited his passion for records management and motivated him to learn coding and data analysis. He created simple tools to automate information retrieval, paving the way for further education.

At TUM, Oscar initially pursued a certificate in Community Development due to low enrollment in his preferred program, graduating with distinction. Financial constraints delayed his pursuit of a diploma, but he eventually enrolled in Library and Information Science, a program that perfectly aligned with his interests. The practical coursework and excellent mentorship greatly enhanced his skills.

During his attachment at KEBS, Oscar developed a records management system that was recognized as the best among all proposals. This achievement earned him several awards from KEBS management, including recognition for:

1. Development of a Digital Records Management System Platform.

2. Outstanding performance as a KEBS intern in Administration and Quality Assurance.

3. Best Intern displaying exemplary character and professionalism.

4. Improved service delivery through a customer management system.

5. Best Performing Attaché, April to June 2024 cohort.

Oscar is now preparing to graduate with distinction in Library and Information Science and looks forward to pursuing a degree in Information Science. He attributes his success to divine guidance and encourages others to believe in themselves and their potential.
