Most incumbent officials of UASU's Technical university of Mombasa (TUM) chapter won their seats for another five year term after defeating their opponents in hotly contested elections held on Wednesday March 25, 2026.
They swept all the seats with significant margins but the losing side also proved their clout by garnering between 30 and 45 per cent votes for various positions.
The Secretary Prof Josiah Ochieng Odalo, successfully defended his position with 128 votes against his opponent Mr Joel Sabore who garnered 78 votes.
The incumbent Chairman Dr Darius Oloo Otieno won back his seat with 130 votes against 76 votes of his opponent Christabel Chahale.
The voting exercise, held at the University Hall, brought together lecturers and academic staff from across various departments in a day-long voting process that began at 8:00 a.m. and concluded at 5:00 p.m., with the electoral officials commending the process as orderly, peaceful, and fully compliant with established electoral procedures.
A total of 206 voters turned out to vote in this year’s UASU election surpassing previous year’s participation of 175 voters. The day long voting exercise proceeded smoothly without any disruptions. UASU in TUM has about 235 registered members.
The incumbent team had adopted "Dons for Dons" mantra in the campaigns while the opponents had "Coalition for Integrity" as their campaign catch line. All individual positions had two contestants, as the winners had a single lineup of contesters and the same applied to the new office seekers.
Each side articulated their policies and vision clearly through pamphlets, office to office tours, and coffee sittings in and outside the University for the last two weeks.
Each side demonstrated how they intended to strengthen the union at a time that many members feel there are several unfinished businesses locally and nationally in matters labour.
The Dons for Dons team had Dr Darius Oloo as the chairperson, Ms Judith Beatrice Alusa for the Vice Chairperson), Prof. Josiah Ochieng Odalo (Secretary), Mr Juma K. Kamanza (Assistant Secretary), Mr Hassan Shee Khamis (Treasurer), and Dr. Kennedy Ochillo Hadullo (Organizing Secretary). Its candidates for trusteeship were Ms Kivhiya JT Kaden, Mr Kepha Abud Angayu, Dr. Eric Mugambi Kinyua, and delegate positions Dr Aloice Omondi Ogweno, Ms Eve Atieno Wasonga, and Dr Helen Mwaka Kiti.
On the other hand, the Coalition for Integrity mounted a strong challenge led by Chairperson aspirant Christabel Chahale, supported by Dr Patrick Korir (Vice Chairperson), Joel Sabore (Secretary), Dr. Samuel Nato (Assistant Secretary), Eng. Dorcas Musingi (Treasurer), and David Malombe (Organizing Secretary). Their team also included Dr Aggrey Adem and Patrick Warui (Delegates), as well as trustees Dr Paul Njihia and Ng’etich Cheruiyot.
Results for the other positions were as follows: for the Vice Chairperson, Ms Judith Beatrice Alusa clinched the seat with 129 votes, defeating Dr Patrick Korir, who secured 77 votes;
Mr Juma K. Kamanza was elected Assistant Secretary with 104 votes, after marginally defeating Dr Samuel Nato, who garnered 100 votes;
In the Treasurer’s contest, Mr Hassan Shee Khamis secured victory with 144 votes, edging out Eng. Dorcas Musingi, who received 62 votes.
The position of Organizing Secretary went to Dr Kennedy Ochillo Hadullo, who obtained 124 votes, defeating David Malombe, who polled 82 votes.
