Introduce Broadcast Journalism and Mass Communication Courses in Lamu Campus, says former TUM student

A community based organisation in Lamu wants to partner with Technical University of Mombasa in training radio journalists in the county. Lamu Youth Alliance founder Walid Ahmed Ali said that TUM has a role to tap on from the community youths and turn them into professional broadcast journalists.

Mr. Ali, a former TUM student pointed out that it is through radio that cases of early marriages and drug abuse can be minimised.

“Drug related cases are still being reported amongst youths in Lamu County and the abused substances include heroin, cocaine, Kuber, Marijuana, Miraa and mugukaa'''''''', he said. In an exclusive interview with corporate communications office, Ali called on TUM to introduce Broadcast Journalism and Mass Communication programs in Lamu Campus. Mr Ali said that the Community based organisation (cbo) had a radio studio with state of the art facilities that were donated from United Kingdom.

“With collaboration, the studio and equipment can be used by the students for practical sessions to enhance their skills,”he said.Mr Ali reiterated that plans are on top gear to establish a community radio station to highlight issues affecting the community in Lamu.

“As an organisation we want to use radio to do extensive civic education to our people'''''''', he stated. On the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement (KUCCIPS), Mr Ali called on potential students interested in joining various institutions of higher learning to take the registration exercise seriously.

“So far at least 126 applicants participated in the exercise at TUM Lamu Campus,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Lamu county Assembly Corporate Affairs Manager, Mr. Hussein Miji urged TUM to also introduce more courses in Hospitality and Hotel Management, Tourism, Marine Resource Management, Marine Engineering and short courses on county governance, banking and finance, community development and HIV and Aids awareness.
