Today, the Technical University of Mombasa organized a County Symposium that centred around the theme "Embedding Visual Arts in the Design of Solid Waste Management Solutions". This symposium was a result of an extensive research project on waste management in Likoni, as well as an art workshop focusing on raising awareness through creative designs and visual arts.

This significant project was a collaboration between the Technical University of Mombasa, EPIC-N, the County Government of Mombasa and Likoni Waste Recyclers Cooperative Society. The symposium was attended by key development partners in waste management including World Wide Fund for Nature Kenya, Haki Yetu Organization, COMRED and Hand in Hand East Africa. The event saw the participation of the Vice-Chancellor, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Academic, Research, and Extension, Registrar PRI, various Dean's of Schools, Directors, and Chairmen of departments.

The team of researchers included Dr Godffrey Nato, Dr Mumini Ndege, Dr Fathima Azmiya, and Dr Mathew Egessa from the Technical University of Mombasa, as well as students from the Environment and Health Sciences Department, Communication Studies Department, and Social Sciences.

During the symposium, Dr. Mumini provided insights into the findings of the waste audit for Likoni Sub-County, while Dr. Fathima Azmiya presented visually engaging graphics created by community members to promote waste management awareness.

The day's activities included the screening of the movie "Pointing Fingers", which was produced by Dr. Nato, the Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences. This thought-provoking film was directed by James Mureti a TUM student pursuing a Bachelor of Journalism and Mass Communication. Additionally, the artwork created by community members was refined by first-year Graphic Design students, and local actors were enlisted for the production.

The symposium also facilitated a stimulating conversation among the attendees regarding waste-related challenges, management techniques, waste segregation, and potential solutions. Through an emphasis on the importance of co-creation and collaboration, various stakeholders shared innovative ideas and resolutions during the insightful discussions.

The symposium concluded with a sense of optimism as the representative from the County Government of Mombasa announced their commitment to replicate the exhibition and movie screening at a social hall in Likoni, sponsored by 'Haki Yetu'. This inspiring initiative promises to further raise awareness and promote sustainable waste management practices within the community. The event highlighted the power of collaboration and co-creation in addressing environmental challenges, leaving everyone with a renewed sense of purpose and determination to make a positive impact.
