Technical University of Mombasa Students Association (TUMSA) leaders were sworn in during a colourful ceremony held at TUM’s main conference room on Monday April 29th, 2019. The ceremony was presided by TUM legal officer Serah Okumu.

A third year student at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences was elected as the chairman in the elections held on April 4, 2019 at main campus.

Dennis Okang’a, the Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism and Mass Communication emerged victorious after garnering 35 votes from 60 delegates.
Okanga won against Ammon Kosgei from Department of Accounting and Finance in the School of Business.

Addressing a section of TUM management and students, the incumbent TUMSA Chairman Okanga lauded the TUM administration for the free and fair elections.

Okanga promised to work with the University administration to improve the welfare of students at the University.

Outgoing TUMSA chairman Jurist Muchiri urged the new team to approach him for guidance and advice for the smooth running of the institution.

Muchiri expressed confidence to the new officials and wished them well in office.

TUM Vice Chancellor Prof. Laila Abubakar advised the new officials to lead by taking academics serious.

She advised the leadership to take the opportunity to sharpen their leadership skills.

At the same time she warned the TUMSA leadership not to spend too much of their time on TUMSA affairs at the expense of their studies.

On TUMSA financial management, she urged the TUMSA Finance Secretary Fatma Hassan and the Union to spend their finances wisely adding that their accounts will be audited at the end of the financial year.

Prof Abubakar disclosed that amendments shall be done on the constitution to allow the leadership to serve in office for two years instead of a year.

“This will give the leadership ample time to fulfil their promises,” she divulged.
