The university’s vice chancellor, Prof. Laila Abubakar, alongside the university senators, officially welcomed the new students of the May intake in a vibrant orientation event. During the event, the students were guided on academic conduct and various university operations to ensure a successful journey at TUM.

The orientation program culminated in this event and included valuable advice from the University Senate and Management Board Members on navigating university life effectively. The physical event occurred at the Main campus, while students at the Kwale and Lamu campuses attended virtually.

During her address, Prof. Laila congratulated the freshers on their admission to TUM and emphasized the university's commitment to academic excellence. She urged the students to engage in extracurricular activities such as clubs and societies to develop their skills and talents, contributing to their overall growth as graduates.

Professor Laila issued a stern warning to the students, advising them against participating in any illegal activities, such as crime, violence and drug abuse. She emphasized that engaging in such actions could lead to severe consequences, including possible expulsion from the university. Highlighting the institution's proximity to the shoreline, she mentioned the availability of swimming lessons for interested students, while urging caution for those not proficient in swimming.

Finally, Prof. Laila encouraged students, particularly those from humble backgrounds, to prioritize their studies and focus on their academic journey at TUM, quoting the inspirational words of Malcolm X: “Education is a passport to the future. For tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today”

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor – Academic Research & Extension (DVC_ARE), Prof. Peter Gichangi, welcomed the students to the institution and emphasized the importance of setting and striving for goals. He challenged them to be ambitious, and goal-oriented and encouraged them to aspire to be creators of job opportunities.

Similarly, The Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Administration, Finance and Planning, Prof. Joseph Rasowo, warmly welcomed the new students and extended his best wishes for their academic endeavours.
