The Guidance and Counselling Department at the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM), in partnership with the Ministry of Health (Mvita Subcounty), G4G, NACADA, and the Pwani Research Foundation, has launched a three-day community sensitization program. This initiative aims to raise awareness about critical issues such as drug abuse, domestic violence, sexual violence, menstrual hygiene, and the prevention of HIV/AIDS. Additionally, the program focuses on educating the community about mental health and connecting individuals with professional counselors for further support. Free vaccinations for children will also be available.

Today, on Day 1 of the initiative, Mr. Edward Kaingu, the Head of Guidance and Counselling at TUM, led a dedicated team to the Burukenge slums. Along with other representatives from TUM, they distributed sanitary towels to community members, providing much-needed support and care.

TUM aims to create impactful community outreach programs focusing on slum areas near the university, particularly in Burukenge. Day 2 activities will take place in Kiziwi on 6th of February while Day 3 will be held in Tudor slums on the 7th.

Community members are encouraged to participate in HIV testing during the three-day event through an organized door-to-door mobile testing campaign.

The program will also offer engaging health talks and provide valuable information, education, and communication (IEC) materials to promote mental wellness within the community.

The Guidance and Counselling Department is committed to building a strong referral network with local addiction and mental health support services to connect individuals in need with essential resources throughout the campaign.

TUM remains dedicated to community engagement, fulfilling its role as a university that not only imparts knowledge but also actively contributes to the well-being of the local community.
