There’s a renewed energy at the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM), and it’s impossible to miss. Across our campuses, a wave of transformation is taking place: new academic programmes, upgraded facilities, national firsts, and an unwavering commitment to quality. Every milestone reflects one thing; we are intentional about progress, driven by our clear vision of excellence.
One of our biggest achievements this year is the launch of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, which takes this University to a new level. This September, we welcome our first ever cohort of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) students, 60 future doctors ready to begin their training at the heart of Mombasa. It is a historic moment, not only for TUM but also for the region as a whole. Graduates of this programme will go on to become general practitioners, surgeons, pediatricians, researchers, public health officials, and leaders in healthcare systems. With hands-on clinical training and expert mentorship, they will be prepared to make a real impact in the world of medicine.
Our other achievement in 2025 is the introduction of the Bachelor of Science in Nautical Science, the first degree of its kind in Kenya. This groundbreaking programme, offered by the Institute of Maritime and Seafaring Studies, will train the next generation of Merchant Navy Officers, Ship Captains, and maritime professionals. It is a bold step forward for the University and a major win for the country’s maritime sector. With Mombasa as our home and the ocean as our classroom, this programme is a natural extension of who we are.
To qualify for the Nautical Science degree, applicants must have a KCSE mean grade of C+ with strong grades in Mathematics, English or Kiswahili, Physics or Physical Sciences, Chemistry or Biological Sciences, and a Group IV subject such as Computer Studies or Aviation. Alternatively, those with Diplomas or Higher National Diplomas in Nautical Science from recognized institutions are eligible to apply. The programme prepares students for high-responsibility roles in global shipping and maritime operations, building careers that span continents and oceans.
But growth at TUM is not just academic. We have recently launched a new Psychology Skills Lab to provide hands-on training for students in psychology, mental health, and counseling. This is part of our broader effort to ensure all our programmes are practical, relevant, and aligned with industry needs. Alongside it, stands the newly established Mombasa Maritime Resource Centre, which will serve as a hub for research, innovation, and industry partnerships in the Blue Economy space.
Campus life is also evolving. The male hostels have recently been renovated, offering students upgraded, more comfortable living spaces. Female hostels were also modernized not too long ago, a reflection of our ongoing investment in a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for all our students. These enhancements speak to our belief that student success depends on more than just what happens in the classroom.
That belief is evident in the remarkable achievements of our students, many of whom are thriving through innovative projects, startups, and groundbreaking ideas. From tech and sustainability to health and social impact, TUM students are creating solutions that matter. And beyond academics, our students are also making their mark in sports, representing the university with pride and passion on regional, national, and even international stages. These stories, featured on our website, are a testament to the talent, resilience, and drive that define the TUM community.
This season of progress is already attracting recognition. In the latest Webometrics global university rankings, TUM rose dramatically from position 9000 to 5000 worldwide. That jump is no accident. It is the result of hard work in research, visibility, digital engagement, and academic excellence, one more step toward our goal of becoming a globally respected university.
As we prepare to welcome 2,239 KUCCPS students, alongside many more self-sponsored learners, we do so with pride. Whether you are coming to study medicine, maritime, engineering, science, business, or the arts, you are joining a university that is growing, focused, and ready to walk with you every step of the way.
