Today, the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) hosted the launch of the Creatives in Arts and Film Literacy Program (CAFIL) by the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB). This initiative brings together artists and filmmakers to explore the role of their work in promoting cultural values under the theme #UsaniiSafe4All.

During the event, CPA Paskal Opiyo, Ag. CEO of KFCB, welcomed stakeholders, creatives, and media representatives, emphasizing the initiative’s importance in empowering local artists and ensuring children's safety from inappropriate content. The CAFIL program aligns with the Talanta Hela Initiative, aiming to equip creatives with skills for responsible content creation while preserving Kenya’s rich cultural heritage.

TUM’s Department of Communication Studies played a vital role in this collaboration, focusing on developing essential media literacy skills among students. This partnership ensures that the CAFIL program addresses industry needs while fostering educational growth, empowering the next generation of creatives.

The event also highlighted practical aspects of the film industry, with local filmmakers gaining insights into obtaining licenses directly from KFCB, streamlining their processes and promoting independence.

Professor Laila Abubakar, Vice Chancellor of TUM, expressed optimism about the program’s impact, stating that it will empower creatives not just in Mombasa, but throughout Kenya.

The successful launch of the CAFIL program signifies a promising step forward for Kenya’s creative industry, fostering economic viability and inspiring students to play an active role in preserving their cultural heritage. The event has left the participants enlightened and conscious about their future contributions to responsible content creation in the arts.
