Career development is a lifelong process, that whether you know it or not, started when you were born. It’s more than deciding on a major and what you would like to get when you graduate. It’s a process meaning that throughout your life you will change, situations will change and you will continually have to make career and life decisions. There are numbers of factors that that may influence your career, including interest, abilities, values, personality and circumstances.
It’s always wise to ask oneself where you will be in 5 years, what you will be doing every day and what sphere you will be working for, in other words what are you career objectives. Some students think that it could be too early to ask such questions while still in high school yet there are only two alternatives in that, either to talk about your career beforehand-now or you graduate in two or four years with an empty track record and cling to a job of high salary, which isn’t bad at all, but you are going to get bored if it’s not your area of interest.
Technical University of Mombasa (TUM)has a proud tradition of providing quality higher education since its inauguration as a Mombasa Institute of Muslim Education (MIOME), 6 decades ago. It’s a market driven institution of higher learning currently offering over 165 job market academic programmes accredited by relevant regulatory bodies. On Thursday,3rd March 2022, through the office of liaison TUM had the opportunity to pay a visit to Khadija Secondary School for a Careers Talk, a program that was aimed at helping the students to know and understand themselves and the world of work in order to make career, educational and life decisions. With all these, the students need to develop a plan and set goals for themselves as having a plan helps them to work in a more focused and mindful fashion.
The delegates from TUM led by Mr. Hamisi and Lecturer Mutisya Musau, were delighted to share with the students on matters to deal with career and how to make informed choices when it comes to what course they can pursue in order to sharpen their skill which they can use not only for employment but for self-employment too. Musau challenged the students to take advantage and join TUM, it being a center of excellence for TVET and pursue courses of their dreams for certificate level. The talk also provided an opportunity to discuss some of the issues affecting the students’ progress such as lack of motivation where most of the students just go to school to sit and wait for teachers to teach and go and background problems. While addressing the session, Mr. Hamisi indicated that it was important to hold more of such deliberations so as to come up with workable solutions to the problems faced by the students.
He also highlighted the fact that TUM also has programs of absorbing some of its students with impeccable leadership and excellence in academics, citing Kennedy Otuoma, who was present at the event, as one of the beneficiaries of such programs. To finish, he thanked the secondary school for their continuous invitation of TUM to go and talk to their students on career choices and requested for more of the corporation stating that TUM does not take it for granted and will always be on the topflight so as to help in fostering the right career choices.
