The Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) Vice-Chancellor, Prof Laila Abubakar, has urged young graduates in Coast region to take initiative and register companies, so they can compete for tenders as bona fide businesses.

Having legit businesses would not only place the youth on a competitive edge alongside other professionals, but also it would help them to procure honest living.

Prof Laila made the remarks when addressing TUM staff during the handing over ceremony of the refurbished Registry reception and the Institute of Computing and Informatics (ICI) Digital centre.

The VC revealed that registry reception was designed by Larry Kavuli, a student from the department of Architecture.

“I am very happy that this reception was constructed by 'TUM' so to speak, and that is our former students," Prof Laila said, adding:

"This is a testament that TUM is producing quality products. “

The renovation of the Registry reception cost Ksh 3.6 million, and it was carried out by contractor Patricia Nkatha, and Ann Karindi who are TUM alumni from the department of Architecture.

The ex-students worked together with architect Mwatu to blend heritage preservation with a climate-responsive design.

Aerated Prof Laila praised the initiative, emphasizing the importance of student-driven projects in fostering academic growth and sustainability.

Alongside the Registry reception, the ICI Digital Centre has also undergone significant refurbishment at a cost of Ksh 2.1 million. The upgrades include: new tiles, painting, modern projector, three additional air conditions and new tables.

These improvements align with TUM’s broader efforts to enhance learning spaces and create a more conducive environment for students and staff.
