The Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) has marked a major milestone with the official launch of a well-equipped Counselling Skills Laboratory; one of the fastest-realized projects in the institution’s history, achieved under the leadership of the new Dean, Dr. Madiha Salim.
The facility, developed through a strategic partnership with the Munshi Foundation, is a significant boost to psychological education and therapy training at the university. The foundation generously funded and equipped the lab, which is designed to support both academic instruction and therapeutic practice.
Dr. Madiha Salim, Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and a Psychology lecturer in the Department of Social Sciences, played a central role in facilitating the project—initiating contact with the sponsors, coordinating the setup, and organizing the space with the support of technician George Kikonde. Their dedication was instrumental in ensuring the lab was professionally prepared and ready for student use.
The launch event was graced by Professor Peter Gichangi, Deputy Vice Chancellor, who praised the initiative as a “dream come true” for the TUM community. Professor Laila Abubakar, Vice Chancellor, in her keynote address, emphasized the power of collaboration in institutional growth. “Your network is your net worth,” she noted, while commending the Munshi Foundation for their generous support. Both leaders highly commended Dr. Madiha Salim and her team, expressing pride in their effort and dedication that brought the project to fruition.
Also in attendance were Mr. Martin Odhiambo, Chair of the Department of Social Sciences, lecturers, and students who witnessed the unveiling of a modern facility. The lab features tools such as art therapy materials, play therapy aids, person-centered therapy resources, therapy dolls, and miniature animal figures, among others. It also houses a rich collection of psychological literature, comprising over 60 books, and hands-on training aids.
This milestone reinforces TUM’s ongoing commitment to equipping students with the skills and resources necessary for excellence in mental health and human services.
