On May 9, 2025, the Department of Mathematics and Physics at the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) organized an impactful career talk at Kashani Secondary School in Kilifi County. The event was led by Dr. Cyril Wandera, the former Chair of the Department, and Dr. Munywoki Mbidyo, the new Chair. Dr. Juliana Asser, the Director of Career Services at TUM, also attended the event. The Principal of Kashani Secondary School, Mr. Ndilo Benjamin Fwaru, welcomed the guests.
The department was honoured to have as guest speakers the distinguished Dr. Dorca Nyamusi, Deputy Director of Quality Assurance, and Dr. Aggrey Adem, Senior Lecturer in Statistics. Their insightful presentations were strongly supported by the passionate contributions of Mr. Bonvince Odhiambo and Ms. Emily Miano, both dedicated members of the department.
Also present to motivate the students were enthusiastic undergraduate students from the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Computer Science program — Sheila Maticha, Lovida, and Carol Mutheu— who shared personal experiences and advice on academic success and career planning.
The engagement targeted students across various forms, offering tailored advice to Form 3 and 4 students on mastering Mathematics and Physics through effective study habits and problem-solving techniques. For Form 2 students, the team provided guidance on subject selection and the long-term implications of those choices on their academic and professional futures.
A strong emphasis was placed on empowering female students to consider careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), with the speakers underscoring the value of mentorship and resilience in traditionally male-dominated fields.
The session concluded with a vibrant Q&A, where students asked thoughtful questions and expressed a deepened interest in STEM careers. The department left Kashani Secondary with a shared sense of accomplishment, having ignited curiosity and ambition in the next generation of scientists and innovators
