On 15th August, TUM TVET Institute joyfully celebrated the graduation of the 4th Cohort of the Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) program. A total of 58 trainees completed an extensive 6-month training. The CBET programs offered were dual in nature, i.e, the students spent 3 months of theoretical instruction at the University and 3 months hands-on experience in the industry. Notably, more than half of the trainees were female. The students focused on specialized level-4 courses in Manual Arc Welding and Instrumentation and Control.

The event was graced by esteemed guests, including the Vice-Chancellor TUM, Prof. Laila Abubakar, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic, Research and Extension, Professor Peter Gichangi, and TUM TVET committee members led by Chairlady Ms Elizabeth Kitao and Director Dr Michael Derrick Odhiambo. The Mvita member of parliament, Hon. Mohammed Machele was represented by a strong delegation lead by Mr. Swaleh Said, the head of the Mvita Education Committee. It should be noted that the success of this program was boosted by a generous financial support by the MVITA NG CDF in favor of slightly over 30 students. Also in attendance were other sponsors and supporters from the industry i.e. Mr Peter Mwaura from Associated Vehicle Assemblers (AVA), Candy Awuor from Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM), and Dr Lawrence Mukhongo, representing Particip who worked in conjunction with GIZ/KOICA. TUM staff and TVET trainers such as Ms Bibiye Mahmoud and Mr Charles Majani, joined the celebrations too.

During the ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor underscored the significance of discipline, and confidence, and inspired the students to become job creators rather than job seekers. Professor Laila highlighted the importance of social capital and wit in creating one's path. The graduates were also encouraged by various management members, staff, and guests to step out of their comfort zones, engage in volunteer and freelance work and apply their skills whenever they can. Furthermore, they were reminded to keep upgrading their skills and not allow this to be the end of their education.

The graduation ceremony for the 4th Cohort of the CBET program was a resounding success, marking the beginning of a promising journey for the trainees. This event not only celebrated their achievements but also set the stage for their future endeavours with high aspirations and a sense of purpose.
