The Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing research, innovation, and knowledge dissemination by strengthening its official scholarly publication, the Multidisciplinary Journal of the Technical University of Mombasa (MJTUM).

MJTUM is TUM's peer-reviewed Diamond Open Access journal, providing researchers with a platform to publish high-quality scholarly work without publication or subscription fees. The journal promotes multidisciplinary research and aims to make scientific knowledge freely accessible to researchers, policymakers, industry, and the wider public.

As part of its strategy to increase the journal's international visibility and impact, TUM convened a two-day strategic workshop at North Coast Hotel, Kikambala, from 27–28 July 2026. The workshop brought together members of the Editorial Board to strengthen the journal's editorial systems, enhance publication quality, and finalize preparations for its application to the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ)—one of the world's leading indexes for quality open-access journals.

The workshop received strong support from the University's leadership, with Vice Chancellor Prof Laila Abubakar and Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic, Research and Extension Prof Peter Gichangi participating in the discussions. Their involvement reaffirmed TUM's commitment to investing in research excellence and ensuring that knowledge generated by the University reaches both local and international audiences.

Among the key outcomes of the workshop were renewed institutional support for MJTUM as TUM's official scholarly journal, plans to establish a dedicated journal office to strengthen editorial operations, and continued investment in systems that will enhance the journal's quality, sustainability, and global competitiveness.

Successful indexing in DOAJ will significantly increase MJTUM's international visibility, making published articles easier to discover, cite, and access worldwide. This milestone will also provide researchers from Kenya and beyond with a credible platform for disseminating research that addresses real-world challenges and contributes to scientific and technological advancement.
