Earlier last week, Wilhelmsen Ship Management held a fruitful discussion with TUM Cadets and updated the Cadets on the progress of the Scouting Mission started earlier last year. The General Manager Wilhelmsen Marine Personnel (K) LTD - the local presence office of the group had a one-on-one talk with the Cadets, sharing their opinion and perspectives with the General Manager, Mr Craig De Savoye. The Journey started with the first visit on 7 August 2024 and the continuous engagement has proven to be a success for TUM Cadets and Kenyan Cadets in General. The team also included Amb. Nancy Karigithu, Advisor in the Executive Office of the President and Ambassador for Blue Economy, and Ms Betty Makena, ITF Inspector. 

The team later paid a courtesy call to the Vice Chancellor, Prof Laila Abubakar. The call was centred on establishing a long-term relationship with TUM and developing a Cadetship program. The Vice-Chancellor reiterated the commitment of her office and the entire University management to the provision of quality maritime education and Training (MET). The Vice-Chancellor also thanked the team for the confidence affirmed in the University MET systems.

Wilhelmsen also lauded the efforts of the Institute of Maritime and Seafaring Studies to make sure that all advanced courses are available to the Cadets after their sea time to fast-track their licensing as Officers. Currently, the Institute and, by extension, the Technical University of Mombasa can provide all STCW Mandatory courses to enable the licensing of an engineering officer. Other courses include Oil, Chemical and Gast Tanker cargo operations which is only offered by the Technical University of Mombasa.
