The Technical University of Mombasa Successfully runs a Pilot Session (Simulation Class) of its Navigation Systems and Liquid Cargo Handling Simulators – Cloud Based Capabilities
The Technical University of Mombasa and Wartsila held a Pilot Training Session for the cloud-based Navigation and Liquid Cargo Cloud Simulators. The training and familiarisation session was held at TUM, drawing participant from the University staff, the Maritime Industry and Maritime students in the University.
The session was opened by Eng. Prof. Richard Onchiri, Dean School of Engineering and Technology on behalf of the Vice Chancellor Prof. Laila Abubakar. The Dean commended the efforts of using advanced technology in teaching both Nautical Science and Marine Engineering at the University and the availability of such technologies from our Simulation Partner, Wartsila. The Dean reiterated the commitment of the University in providing quality Maritime Education and Training.
Captain Suleiman Bakari made his opening remarks on the importance of simulation in Maritime Education and Training (MET). With his vast experience in Oil and Chemical Tankers, Capt. Suleiman commended the efforts by the University to provide such platforms for quality in MET. He particularly commented on the Liquid Cargo Handling Simulator, which shall provide valuable and efficient technologies to training in Oil, Chemical and Gas Cargo handling.
The Simulators were introduced by the instructors and pilot simulation scheduled starting with Liquid Cargo Handling Simulator and followed by Navigation systems – NT Pro simulator which covered Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) and RADAR/ARPA.
The Liquid Cargo Handling Simulation commenced with five (5) students from TUM taking the roles of actual trainees. The trial class covered an instructor led session and a learner centred session. The Navigation systems simulator were conducted with the student trainees and Mr. Hafidh Kumba (a Maritime instructor at the University) added in as a trainee to lead the other trainees in the exercises while projecting his session on a large screen.
