Welcome to the Department of Pure and Applied Sciences (PAS) of the Technical University of Mombasa. This is one of the oldest department of the university that is located in the main campus whose core mandate includes training, research and consultancy in the areas Chemistry, Food Science, Biotechnology, Biochemistry and Forensic Technology.

The department is committed to producing highly trained and quality graduates with hands on skills in the above disciplines. Programs in these disciplines are aimed at meeting the growing demand for manpower in the research and learning institutions as well as the chemical and biotechnological product industries. Additionally, the skilled graduates will have the capabilities to develop innovative ways of addressing problems and challenges facing the society locally and internationally. The department, therefore, is participating in the training of human resource personnel to manage the chemical, food and biotechnological industries and researchers who are expected to contribute towards achievement of Kenya’s Vision 2030 and sustainable development goals.
The department has tailor-made competency based, practical oriented diploma, undergraduate, masters and doctor of philosophy training programs. These programs are designed to ensure the graduates acquire high-level problem-solving skills and are able to think outside the box as well as adaptable to new situations and scenarios in the job market. The programs are also geared towards addressing different needs in the current fast-changing workplace and present the graduates with a competitive edge in a range of existing and new employment and or entrepreneurship opportunities. The mode of study for these programs are student-centered approach implemented through face-to-face method of teaching and blended model of study which employs online learning modal system (LMS).
The Pure and Applied Sciences Department has a wide range of highly trained specialized members of staff ranging from professors, lecturers and technical staff who are involved in teaching, student supervision, outreach, consultancy, and research. The members of staff have won research funding from local and international organizations and have published in high ranking scholarly journals for disseminating the scientific information generated within and outside the department. The department has linkages and collaborations with various stakeholders, ranging from government development agencies, private sector partnerships, and community-based organizations from which stand point the department has gained a good rapport with stakeholders and the community at large
